Project Title: Transcriptional Regulation in Lipid Nephrotoxicity

Project Description: Metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia are major disease groups worldwide. The kidney is a target organ. Lipid-toxicity is one main mechanism contributing to end stage renal failure in these diseases. The project will explore the role of a lipid-associated transcription factor in mediating lipid-toxicity in the kidney.

Project Background: The project is part of the International Research Training Group GRK 880/2 funded by the German Research Foundation at the University of Heidelberg.
This PhD programme focuses on inflammatory and metabolic factors important in microvascular diseases. Regular training seminars are part of the programme.
The department Cellular and Molecular Pathology has a long track record in studying renal and vascular diseases within house generated gene deficient animals (e.g Nat Med. 14:979-984 2008, Nat Med. 15:623-5 2009, Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 102:12459-64 2005, Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 104:5977-82 2007)

Scholarship Details: Applicants should have excellent marks in one of the following scientific disciplines: Genetics, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.
The successful candidate has very good hands-on skills in basic chemical and/or molecular biology methods. He/she should be able to efficiently work in a young team of scientists and technicians with easy exchange of methods.
