The Research Training Group (RTG 1644) on "Scaling Problems in Statistics", funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG), seeks applicants for 1 PhD Position in "The role of heterogeneity in spatial plant population dynamics", starting October 1, 2010.
The project will deal with the quantification of spatial patterns and their relationship with spatial tree dynamics in temperate forests. The successful applicant holds a master degree in Ecological Sciences, Plant Sciences, Forest Ecology, Applied Mathematics or a related field, has a strong background in statistics and is eager to learn methods of spatial point pattern analysis and point process modelling. Experience in ecological modelling is beneficial.
This project will be in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Christian Wirth (Dept. of Special Botany and Functional Biodiversity Research, University of Leipzig, http://alfresco.uni-leipzig.de/spezbot/).

The highly interdisciplinary Research Training Group aims at solving current questions in the area of spatial ecology and other areas of applied statistics. It distinguishes itself through a structured graduation programme, joint supervision, and a study program consisting of methodologically oriented lectures and interdisciplinary research seminars. The salary is in accordance with the German state regulated public service salary scale (75 % E 13 TV-L).
