SSC Strategic Science Consult LtD
22761 Hamburg
Stahltwiete 14a
Germany

Position: PhD student Salary: 0,5 E13 TV-L equivalent to about 20.000,- Euro p.a.

SSC is coordinating the interdisciplinary R&D project TERM (Technologies for the Exploration of the Resource Microalgae) and runs a pilot plant for the large scale cultivation of microalgae coupled to the mitigation of CO2 from flue gas of gas fired power plant. TERM has a very focussed Research Strategy coupling physiological and biochemical research work on microalgae with the development of technologies. By this approach TERM obtained within short time a leading position in the development of microalgae technologies confirmed by two European patents assigned since August 2008.

We are now seeking a highly motivated PhD student who will do research work on the regulation of the activities of the photosystems I and II in dependence on temperature and radiation in a photobioreactor system. With this work you will help with the development of parameters and threshold values for the process management. Coupled to the position will be some coordination of master students and project organisation.

You will have a university diploma/master degree in Biology, Microbiology, Bioengineering or related topics and practical experiences in the cultivation of (micro-) algae and the analysis of metabolic processes/substances. The post offers an excellent opportunity for an individual who likes to have an input into research focus, act on once`s own initiative, team work and sophisticates technology.
This is a full-time position based both at the University of Hamburg, Biozentrum Klein Flottbek (Hamburg) and at our pilot plant at Hamburg Reitbrook. Method of application is by sending your CV and master thesis together with a cover letter in which you explain how you respond to the profile given above.
