An interdisciplinary PhD student position is available in the groups of Prof. Handschin and Prof. van Nimwegen at the Biozentrum, University of Basel. The position concerns a project on structure and dynanics of transcription regulatory networks, in particular those that control skeletal muscle plasticity in health and disease. The succesful applicant will develop and apply computational methodologies for analyzing and integrating high-throughput data that will be obtained from next generation ultra high-throughput sequencing, transcriptome analysis, and other systems biology approaches, with the goal of understanding the gene expression control at a systems level. The position, which is funded by a SystemsX.ch interdisciplinary PhD (IPhD) fellowship, thus combines bioinformatic approaches with biological techniques. Accordingly, the successful candidate will be a member of both research groups, that of Prof. Handschin (molecular biology) and that of Prof. van Nimwegen (comp!
utational systems biology).

Applicants should be highly motivated, have a solid background in applied mathematics and programming, preferably with some experience in bioinformatics, a strong interest in biological problems and a MSc, diploma or equivalent degree. Experience in the area of transcriptional regulation or with next generation sequencing methods is a plus. Good knowledge of English is expected, German is helpful but not necessary. The salary is according to the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation. The position is initially funded for 3 years with the possibility for a 1-year extension. SystemsX.ch IPhD fellowships also include separate funds for the participation at scientific meetings. The entrance date by mutual arrangement.

To apply, please send your CV, summary of research interests and 2-3 letters of recommendation to Prof. Handschin. For further information, see www.biozentrum.unibas.ch, www.systemsx.ch and/or directly contact Christoph Handschin or Erik van Nimwegen.
