PhD positions are available to study the molecular mechanisms and biology of a multifunctional tRNA processing enzyme.

Human mitochondrial RNase P is the first demonstrated "RNA-free" member of the RNase P enzyme family (Cell 135, 462) and thereby a unique example of the transition from RNA- to protein-based catalysis. Moreover, it is a multifunctional enzyme complex, as a subunit of it is also active as a tRNA methyltransferase. Studies will target the molecular mechanisms of substrate recognition, phosphodiester hydrolysis, and methylgroup transfer, as well as structural and cell biological aspects of this unique enzyme complex.

Successful candidates will take part in an international collaborative research project involving the groups of
Walter Rossmanith, Center for Anatomy & Cell Biology, Medical University of Vienna, Austria,
Roland K. Hartmann, Institute of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Philipps-University Marburg, Germany, and
Maria Selmer, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Uppsala University, Sweden.
Depending on the focus of the respective PhD project, students will be based primarily in Vienna or in Marburg, though the course of the project may require part time change to one of the other labs.

Research is funded by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF), the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), and the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Candidates should hold a masters degree (or equivalent) in biochemistry, molecular biology, or a closely related discipline.

Complete applications including

- a meaningful CV
- a brief outline of research experience and scientific interests and a statement of motivation (up to one page in total)
- relevant certificates
- a letter of recommendation from the diploma/masters thesis supervisor
