A PhD student fellowship is available by the DFG-funded International Research Training Group (Internationales Graduiertenkolleg GRK 1384 of the DFG) "Enzymes and multienzyme complexes acting on nucleic acids" (http://www.uni-giessen.de/cms/fbz/fb08/biologie/biochem/international-networks/gradu) in the group "Influenza Virology" of Prof. Dr. Stephan Pleschka in the Institute of Medical Virology (Medical Faculty) of the Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen (Germany) from 1st of April 2010.

The Training Group provides an intriguing research environment including seminars, workshops, training courses, assessment of progress and success and collaborations. The Training Group collaborates with the respective training group at the M.V. Lomonosov-University, Moscow, Russian Federation.
The fellowship (1200 Euro per month) is currently limited to the end of March 2011, but prolongation shall be made possible. Graduation will proceed in the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry of the University of Giessen to achieve a Dr. rer. nat. (PhD equivalent).

Project description:
We have recently described the effect of the reassortment of the NS-segment on the replication characteristics of highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIV) (Ma. et al., JVI, 2010). Here variants of a H7-type HPAIV carrying different NS segements of H7- or H5-type HPAIV showed sticking differences in their replication. The research will focus on the amino acid sequence variation of two related NS segments, found in two of the reassortant HPAIV. In particular, we are interested in the effect of specific NS amino acids on the replication activity of the viral polymerase. The work will include handling of infectious virus under BSL-3 conditions and of radioactive materials.

Prerequisites:
Applicants should hold a M.Sc. or Diploma degree in biology or a related life science discipline. Candidates should be highly motivated and should have a strong background in molecular biology and biochemistry. The language in the work group is English as well as in the courses taught in the PhD program and is therefore mandatory, whereas German is useful, but not strictly required. Applications of non German speaking candidates are welcome.

The Justus-Liebig University Giessen is an equal opportunity employer. Applications of severely disabled with the same suitability are preferred.

5. examination results (transcripts of B.Sc./Vordiplom and M.Sc./Diplom)
6. a summary of the M.Sc./Diploma thesis
7. a brief description of the main emphasis of studies and experimental work (if applicable, max. 1 page).
