At the Chair of Bioprocess Engineering of the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg (Head: Prof. Udo Reichl) a PhD student position (100%) is currently available in the group of Downstream Processing.
The Bioprocess Engineering group mainly focuses on mammalian cell culture for vaccine production, downstream processing for purification of inactivated antigens and dynamics of microbial communities and works in close collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institute for the Dynamics of Complex Technological Systems, which is also located in Magdeburg.

The vacant PhD student position is positioned within the BMBF research project: "Employment of synthetic ligands for the affinity purification of glycoproteins and vaccine antigens", which is set up in close collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institute in Magdeburg, the Eberhard-Karl University in Tübingen and various industrial partners. The research activities for this particular position are located at the Max-Planck-Institute.

Methoden:
The research tasks will include an adaptation of the method of Lathrop et al. (Analytical Biochemistry, 2007) for the screening of potential ligands, verification and characterization of ligands by means of Biacore and ELISA techniques and eventually the establishment of a suitable affinity chromatographic procedure.
The ideal candidate should have a background in biotechnology, bioengineering or biochemistry with profound knowledge of bioanalytical assays, interaction analysis (ELISA, BIACORE) and a basic knowledge in chromatography.
Fluent English and good communication skills are required to be successful in the multidisciplinary and international environment of the project group.
The Max-Planck-Institute and the Otto-von-Guericke University provide excellent working conditions and a stimulating scientific atmosphere.

Women are explicitly encouraged to apply for the described positions. Disabled people will be favoured in the case of identical competence and performance.
