We wish to develop methods to determine the qualitative differences in the composition of ovine skins at various stages of processing and
to relate these to the different properties of the skins. Once suitable methods have been developed, they will be used to monitor skins that have been subjected to various treatments. This project involves working with a team of experienced scientists at the Leather and Shoe Research Association of New Zealand, to develop methods to alter the properties of sheep skin in order to make it suitable for the manufacture of new products. The Institute of Molecular Biosciences has a strong research focus on cell and molecular biology with a vibrant interdisciplinary research culture. There are excellent research facilities available in the Institute including 'state of the art' facilities for microscopy (MMIC), DNA Sequencing and structural biology. The Institute supports five Science majors: Biochemistry, Genetics, Plant Biology, Microbiology and Biological Sciences. It is located on the Manawatu campus of Massey University located in Palmerston North, New Zealand Scholarship details. Applicants should have at least a Second class honours (Division I) degree, or at least a '2' in the German 'Diplom', in biochemistry. Experience with protein analyses and protein chemistry along with an interest in proteomics would be an advantage. This is a three year funded position. A scholarship comprising a stipend of $NZ 25,000 per annum plus fees. International students are welcome to apply.
