The research group of Prof. Ralf Enz at the Institute for Biochemistry, University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany, invites applications for PhD students in the field of molecular neuroscience, synapse function and associated diseases.


Background of our projects:

In all human populations and ethnic groups, the fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common form of inherited mental retardation. Impaired individuals display a variety of intellectual deficits ranging from mild learning impairments to abnormal social behaviours and autism (ASD). The disease is caused by a transcriptional silencing of FMRP, a mRNA binding protein that is most abundant in the brain, and which functions in the regulation of synaptic activity related local protein synthesis. Interestingly, FMRP has been found to interact with a substantial sub-population of mRNAs, approximately 4% of all mRNAs in the mammalian brain, and including several synaptic proteins.
In line with these findings, we have identified two so far unknown proteins as targets of FMRP, and provided first evidence that those proteins are important for crucial synaptic processes such as clathrin mediated endocytosis and mGluR signalling. Importantly, disturbed mGluR signalling has been found to be responsible for many symptoms observed in FXS patients as well as in FMR1-/- mice, which are a model of FXS.
The aim of our studies is to unravel the cellular function of those proteins and to understand their role in FXS. We utilize state-of-the-art proteinbiochemistry, histology and behavioural techniques to investigate protein-protein interactions and their relevance for FXS in the context of neuronal function as well as behaviour. The projects available are expected to provide deep insights in the function and plasticity of synaptic contacts as well as into pathomechanisms of FXS.


PhD candidates:

As further support of our team we are looking for highly motivated PhD students with excellent education in live sciences and committed to perform a career in science. The projects are not only supported by an excellent technical infrastructure directly available at the institute, but also by close scientific supervision provided and a stimulating research environment present in the charming town of Erlangen.
