The post is part of a project aimed at unraveling the question on how too many centrosomes can lead to aneuploidy, a hallmark of many cancer cells.

The centrosome plays a fundamental role for nucleating and organizing cytoplasmic microtubules during interphase and promoting the assembly of the mitotic spindle during mitosis. Having the correct number of centrosomes is crucial for proper chromosome segregation during cell division and for the prevention of aneuploidy. Errors in centrosome duplication lead to cells with too many centrosomes. Interestingly, cancer cells have developed a mechanism to undergo biopolar cell division despite an erroneous number of centrosomes by clustering the centrosomes at their spindle poles.

The aim of the PhD project is to unravel the mechanism of centrosomal clustering with emphasis on the role of a protein kinase, Plk4 in this process.

Modern cell biological techniques including life cell imaging and high resolution confocal laser scanning microscopy as well as biochemical techniques will be used.
Applicants should have experience in protein biochemistry and molecular biology. Starting date: January 2011

Highly motivated scientists should send their curriculum vitae and arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent by e-mail to:
